16 people died as 5-storied building collapses in Tejgaon![]() A three-decade-old 5-storied building of Phoenix Group collapsed in the city's Tejgaon industrial area at about 10.30am on 25th Feb,06. At least 18 people were killed and 40 others injured. Local people said some 100 people, mostly construction workers were trapped inside the rubble of the five-storied building of Phoenix Textiles Ltd, adjacent to the Mohakhali bus terminal, when it collapsed with a huge sound. Six people were killed being trapped under debris, while three died when the portions of the collapsed building fell on two rickshaws passing through a nearby road. Plying of vehicles on the road has remained suspended. The building was used as Phoenix Textiles Ltd for as long as 22 years since 1978. The textile factory was shifted only two months ago from the building and it was being refurbished to turn into a 500-bed hospital, called Phoenix Hospital, instead of demolishing it by the Phoenix Group authorities. The workers were busy in construction work when the building collapsed. Phoenix Textiles Ltd is a sister concern of Phoenix Group, which is owned by industrialist Deen Mohammad, who is also a director of The City Bank Ltd. He is also the chairman of Phoenix Group, a leading conglomerate comprising more than twenty industrial units ranging from leather, textile, and insurance to leasing, fabrics, spinning, plastic, steel and metal. Mirza Abbas told journalists that he was concerned regarding all the high-rise buildings of the country. He said a bill would be placed in parliament in a day or two so that none could evade the responsibilities of faulty construction. 'We have delayed in formulating the law. However, we have done whatever has been done,' he said. |
